Review: ‘Fantasy Strike’ Is A Fighting Game That Understands…Game of the Year: Jordan Minor’s Best Video Games of 2018 Stay on target For too long the definition of “Game of the Year” has been unfairly narrow. How boring is it to see every website shower the same stale AAA games with praise at the end of each holiday season? So at Geek.com, we’re doing what we can to put a stop to this in Game of the Year, a new column celebrating worthy alternative picks for the year’s greatest game regardless of genre, platform, year of release, or even quality. Here, any game can be Game of the Year! There’s been sex in video game since the beginning of the medium. You’ll be shocked how erotic those pixels can get. But we’re arguably living in an age of Peak Video Game Horniness, especially because that horniness is cropping up in places you wouldn’t expect. You wouldn’t think the discourse surrounding games about pigeons, colorful superheroes shooting each other, and Japanese squid teenagers would be super sexual. But go check out the communities for Hatoful Boyfriend, Overwatch, and Splatoon. We’re also in an age of Peak Dad in video games. Some have lamented the so-called “Dadification of Video Games” or games in which you play as gruff troubled men taking care of innocent children (usually girls). From BioShock Infinite to The Last of Us to the upcoming God of War reboot, many critics see this movement as aging game developer patriarchs attempting to stay relevant in a medium that prizes youth. It’s like the Dad Bod phenomenon but with AAA budgets. So it shouldn’t be surprising that these gaming trends, horniness, and dadiness, have now collided. The result is the breakout PC gaming hit of the summer, and this week’s Game of the Year, Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator.Dating simulators are nothing new, and Dream Daddy is fairly representative of the genre. You pursue potential romantic partners, go on dates with them, listen to what they have to say, and try to continue your courtship through your words and actions. It’s adventure game stuff but the puzzles are about trying to figure out another digital human’s needs and desires, the most perplexing puzzles of all.But as the name implies, in Dream Daddy you and all of your suitors are hot fathers. In-between dates, you’re also trying to be a good dad to your teenage daughter Amanda. The seven daddies you date come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors, from chubby fishing dad Brian to spooky goth dad Damien. But they’re all equally beautiful in both body and soul so take your pick. There are also a ton of customization options for crafting your own daddy, which players have been eager to share online. The premise sounds like a joke, and the game thankfully doesn’t take itself super seriously. Also, Dream Daddy was developed and published by popular gaming YouTubers Game Grumps. I’ve enjoyed a lot of Game Grumps streams. Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson is an especially talented animator, voice actor, and parody rapper. But given the group’s past affiliation with famous hatemonger JonTron, I was wary of how the game’s explicitly LGBT themes would be treated.Fortunately, Dream Daddy is super sweet and earnest and legitimately progressive. It’s cyber-twee. It doesn’t kink-shame anyone for being into dads. It lets you play as a trans man dad with different chest binder options. I’m definitely not an authority on the relationship between daddies and sexuality, but from a distance writers, Vernon Shaw and Leighton Gray seemed to have grappled with the material in an appreciated, respectable way that hasn’t alienated marginalized fandom. So hop on Steam and find the father you’ve been waiting for with Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, the Game of the Year. I want to meet that dad.Check back next week to read about the next Game of the Year!View as: One Page Slides1/51. Dating is fun, but being a good dad is its own reward.2. Date dads of all shapes and sizes and colors.3. Create and play as the dad of your dreams.4. Different dads have different ways to their heart.5. Thankfully, Dream Daddy respectfully treats its LGBT themes.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
