The festival, which was staged in the Kalinago Territory on 7-8 August 2015, attracted patrons from Guadeloupe, Martinique and across Dominica where the Kalinago culture was displayed. Kalinago Chief Charles Williams says there are great reviews of the first edition. “The Kalinago Festival went very well except for the exhibition that was, in my opinion, not properly coordinated,” the Chief reported. He said while there were some exhibits, “we wanted more” and lamented the lack of participation from the arts and craft people in the Territory.“We did not have enough participation from the arts and craft people although the Kalinago Territory is a heavily productive area in arts and craft…We also was handicap in that we had some initial photographs and videos of the Kalinago Territory but we were not able to do that part of it,” Chief Williams said. However, the Chief reported that the musical aspect of the Festival was well executed. “I want to give the Petite Savanne Music Band and the Petite Savanne Cultural Group thumbs up because they did a wonderful job on stage and we are very happy”.“The musical nights went well, there was no rain, there was no trouble, peaceful, very well put together and everyone enjoyed what was put together,” the Chief added.Chief Williams, who headed the Festival’s organizing committee, said the main feature which was the Regatta, also received a high rating as it surpassed expectations. “The boat that actually won that Regatta, so to speak, the crew was from the San Sauveur area and the Marigot people have also called for them to be involved next time and they were very excited and it was like a carnival-like scene when they arrived at Marigot…the whole place was packed with people,” Chief Williams said.last_img read more
